Instructions
- 1
Use a rolling pin to flatten each slice of bread until thin.
- 2
Spread a thin layer of Nutella over each slice and roll tightly into a log.
- 3
Whisk eggs with a splash of milk in a bowl.
- 4
Dip each roll into the egg mixture, coating all sides.
- 5
Melt butter in a pan over medium heat. Cook the rolls until golden brown on all sides.
- 6
For a cleaner, bakery-style look, trim the ends of each roll after cooking.
- 7
Dust with powdered sugar and top with strawberries or your favorite toppings.
Toti’s Tips
- ✓Flatten the bread with a rolling pin first, since compressed bread rolls tightly around the filling without cracking the way regular fluffy bread would.
- ✓Use soft, fresh bread rather than a firmer or stale loaf. Fresh bread is pliable enough to roll into a tight log, while drier bread tends to crack and let the filling leak out.
- ✓Don't overfill with Nutella. Too much filling has nowhere to go once the roll heats up and cooks, so it squeezes out the ends and burns in the pan instead of staying gooey inside.
- ✓Cook over medium heat so the outside has time to turn golden and crisp before the inside dries out, since high heat browns the surface too fast while the center stays cold.
- ✓Trim the ends after cooking for a cleaner look, since the tips are usually the least evenly rolled and can look messy or leak a bit of filling.
- ✓Dust with powdered sugar right before serving rather than ahead of time, since the sugar can dissolve into any moisture on the surface if it sits too long.
